Finding Strength in the Storm: Meet Shelby, Therapist at Nava Therapy

At Nava Therapy, we believe that healing begins with connection. That’s why we’re proud to introduce Shelby, a deeply compassionate therapist with over 12 years of experience supporting women through trauma, especially those impacted by domestic violence. Shelby brings not only clinical expertise to her work, but a grounded empathy shaped by her personal and professional journey.

A Therapist with Deep Roots in Healing

Shelby’s career began with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, where she served as a therapist in their health department, working closely with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. That formative experience taught her how to sit with people in their darkest moments -- and how to honor their strength.

“This time helped her witness and empathize with victims,” Shelby reflects. “It wasn’t just about helping people heal -- it was about understanding how trauma lives in the body and mind, and how to gently walk with someone through that.”

Her work is guided by one powerful question: How do you heal as the world keeps moving?

Whether it’s navigating life in mid-transition, chaos in relationships, or buried trauma that keeps resurfacing, Shelby specializes in helping clients “move forward and heal in the middle of life’s own chaos.”

Culturally Informed, Trauma-Focused Care

Shelby is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a highly effective therapy for trauma. She is especially passionate about providing EMDR to Black individuals, people of color, and other historically marginalized communities, where trauma often goes unacknowledged or untreated.

She understands the complex cultural layers that can influence someone’s healing path, and creates a therapeutic space where identity and history are honored -- not erased.

A Therapist Who Walks the Talk

Originally from Saginaw, Shelby studied at Central Michigan University and now calls Southeast Michigan home. When she’s not in the therapy room, you’ll likely find her in nature, hiking with her two dogs -- Louie, a bulldog and husky mix, and Archie, a Detroit rescue and shepherd-beagle mix.

“I love spending time up north in a cabin in the Upper Peninsula,” Shelby shares. “It’s my way of slowing down and reconnecting.”

That philosophy -- slowing down to reconnect -- is one she brings into every therapy session.
